Greg Friedler is an internationally renowned visual artist  and one of the most prolific photographic artists working today.

Friedler was born in New Orleans in 1970. He received his BA in Political Science and French from the University of Colorado at Boulder in 1993. Greg received his Masters of Fine Art from the School of Visual Arts  in Photography and related media in 1996.

Friedler is a curious observer and acute documentarian of the human condition.  He is fueled by a sincere desire to fully see, understand, empathize with, analyze, and sum up…. his fellow human beings. He is fascinated by identity, existence, and how people fit into a given society. His portraits attempt to unmask his subjects of their veneer and capture the rawness of their humanity on the page.

Friedler’s art involves much more than  portraits of mankind. Friedler’s vision renders life stripped down to its core, raw existence. His rare vision allows him to connect with the timeless beauty and visceral essences of the world before his camera. Friedler’s subject matter ranges from people (portraits and nudes) to still lifes of detritus to mixed media paintings. His current project is called “abstractual” which is an ongoing exploration of urban surfaces which look like abstract paintings.

“ I am convinced, that Greg Friedler is one of this century’s most important photographers. In 100 or even 2000 years his work will be able to relate – through manifesting personalities, and glowing still lifes, and departing from the microcosms of society– the whole truth of our era, the condition of our social systems, with captivating elegance and unadorned reality at once. Because, unlike many of his contemporaries and fellow photographers, Greg Friedler doesn’t dream. Greg Friedler triggers the shutter button exactly at the point where others turn away and, at the same time, does it with so much sensitivity, that he creates a new dimension to the image, in which the imagery of journalism and ‘mise en scène’, leads to a new style, within which he lets the respect for his models –as a distinctive feature–, and his democracy, and his humanity shine bright as the sun. “

-Alexander Scholtz, German publisher of Galerie Vevais.

Friedler has been the subject of two documentary films:  Naked London on the BBC  in December 1999 in the United Kingdom, and America Stripped: Naked Las Vegas. He is the creator of five monographs and his work has been included in 10 anthologies to date, including The World’s Top Photographers: Nudes from the year 2000. His work has been exhibited in select venues around the world.

Friedler’s  sharp wit and dry humor are unforgettable. He enjoys spending time with his family, friends, and his dog Pepper. He also enjoys skiing, playing tennis, painting, doing yoga, and meditating.
